New York, NY, May 11, 2011-Data that shows minimally invasive surgery (MIS) procedures may reduce hospital-acquired infections will give an additional boost to the $24.8 billion market for MIS equipment, according to healthcare market research firm Kalorama Information. Kalorama estimates this market will reach $34.8 billion by 2015 in its latest report, Minimally Invasive Surgical Devices, World Market. Minimally invasive surgery, which uses specialized instruments, miniature cameras with microscopes, tiny fiber-optic flashlights and high definition monitors, makes an incision about 2 to 4 inches in length, which is much smaller than the traditional 6 to 10 inches. The report cites recent survey data which found that using this method results in less trauma to the body, less blood loss, smaller surgical scars, a lower risk of contracting a hospital-acquired infection and shorter hospital stays. "It's a win-win for government and insurance companies looking to reduce long-term healthcare costs," says Bruce Carlson, publisher of Kalorama Information. "Although the devices are expensive, the cost is justified by long-term savings and more effective patient treatment." According to the report, 40% of hospital-acquired infections from hysterectomy, appendectomy and laparoscopic cholecystectomy occurred within 30 days after hospital discharge. However, the use of MIS saw an overall decrease in the odds of acquiring an infection, specifically an 80% reduction in respiratory tract infections, a 69% reduction in bloodstream infections, a 59% reduction in wound infections and a 39% reduction in urinary tract infections. "Reducing hospital-acquired infections translates to a reduction in readmissions to the hospital, patient suffering and cost," adds Carlson. "The key factor in the use of these devices is keeping patients in the hospital for the least amount of time." Minimally Invasive Surgical Devices, World Market includes product information, procedure volume data, world demographics and trends, as well as detailed company profiles. Total market sizes for six general surgery areas, reflecting revenue earned by manufacturers, are broken up by U.S., Europe and Rest of World.
