Epic Makes Inroads: Kalorama EMR as Covered in Healthcare IT News

A Healthcare IT News story citing Kalorama’s estimates of the Electronic Medical Records Market notes that once-small provider Epic has moved into the top three position in EMR, according to our analysis.   The Wisconsin-based company is private, but has consistently picked up large hospital systems with large physician affiliate bases, and expanded services within these systems.  The article references managment problems at rival Allscripts for partially explaining Epic’s share position.  This reflects 2013 numbers only.  Allscripts is also competitive, has resolved most of its 2014 management issues and is expected to chart this year.     These two companies are picking up share from larger healthcare IT companies.

The article also notes that EMR is still an industry where small companies can make a difference due to the number of hospital and physician customers:

The upshot? The EMR industry is booming but fragmented, with more than half of marketshare (52 percent) represented by scads of smaller companies - a steep uptick from 42 percent in 2013
